Peg Tube Feeding Instructions

1. Remove the cap from the tube and unclamp the tube.

2. Check the tube for reflux
a. Attach a 5 or 10 cc syringe to the tube and gently aspirate back until there is a mild amount of back pressure.
b. Note the amount aspirated then slowly give this back.
c. If there is > then 25% of the previous feeding volume still present then do not feed the patient at this time.

3. Warm the food to be fed in a microwave until luke warm.
a. Mix the food with your finger to insure there is no hot spots

4. Slowly give the food (over 5-10 minutes as the volume of food increases).

5. Flush the tube with 10cc of lukewarm water.

6. Place the cap on the tube and re-clamp the tube.

** Cats with lipidosis tend to be nauseated and vomit easily. Try to feed them without moving them very much.

If excessive swallowing or drooling occurs as you are feeding, please stop, flush the tube and rest the cat for 1/2 hour or so. Then administer the remaining food slowly.

**Always flush the tube with 10cc of warm water after any feeding OR medication.**
